My grandmother used to raise purebred dogs and take them to dog shows to compete. She was very strict about taking good care of them, and she used to get angry when she saw people who were too casual about it. She would say that a dog needs to be trained to do things, it needs to know clearly who is the boss, and it needs enough room to run around, or it will be nervous and unhappy.
I think she was right. The breeds she used to raise were, first, Airedale terriers -- who are very protective and fierce -- and, later, cocker spaniels - who are very smart.
